The economic downturn: what's the outlook for oil & gas?

In case you haven’t heard, we’re now officially in a recession! While the oil & gas industry is perceived as somewhat more resistant than property or retail to the impact of an economic downturn, it is by no means immune to its effects.

Despite overall oil & gas production being up 6 percent in 2008, predictions are that the worst is yet to come for the industry, within which Royal Dutch Shell announced record profits of $31billion and BP made $25billion during 2008, despite the companies reporting losses of $2.81 billion and $3.3 billion respectively in quarter four...read more.

NES NEWS ROUND UP

NES: Best Engineering Recruitment Firm

It’s official: NES is the best engineering recruitment firm. Announced on 28th April at the Recruiter Awards for Excellence in London, NES secured the title ahead of three other finalists in its category and of course countless other staffing businesses in the UK.

Recruitment companies were evaluated by a wide panel of distinguished judges, on their quality of service, innovation and profitability. NES’s commitment to the engineering marketplace - particularly its work with the next generation of engineers - as well as its partnership agreement with the IChemE, career management articles in The Chemical Engineer and presentations at specialist engineering conferences clearly set NES apart from its competition, leading the judges to their final decision...read more.

NES tops recruitment league table

Neil Tregarthen, CEO at NES, has expressed his “delight” at the firm’s position in first place within the Crain’s Manchester Business league table of recruitment companies.

The table, which sees the top recruitment companies in the North West ranked according to their 2007/08 gross revenue, saw NES at £253,000,000. Neil Tregarthen attributes much of this success to the company’s global expansion - into New Jersey, Canada, Perth, Sydney and Jakarta – during 2008...read more.

Record profits for NES

Recruitment firm NES today shrugged off the UK economic slowdown with record annual profits after stepping up its global expansion.

Altrincham-based NES beat its own forecasts with a 24 per cent surge in profits for the year to October 31, from £9.7m to £12m...read more.

Parasol & Quay Accounting - the “Gold Standard” for 2009 and beyond?

Bruce Hunter, Parasol’s agency relationship manager for NES, explains why right now is the time for contractors to rethink their ways of managing their financial arrangements.

Hardly a day goes by when there is not news on one of the many contractor websites about HMRC activity within the contractor community. At a time when HMRC’s own resources are in turn being squeezed, there is little doubt that HMRC are expecting that high profile court cases and strong messages from them will make contractors believe that now is the right time to step into line. The introduction of heavier fines for late submission of information and other measures, including repeated warnings about the dangers of non compliant providers, all point to HMRC wanting the contractor community to better “self police” itself...read more

Your questions answered - how can I get more interviews?

I’m a mechanical engineer and have gained most of my experience in oil & gas. I’ve submitted my CV for a number of roles with major operators and EPC companies to take me to the next stage in my career but have only been invited to one interview and unfortunately someone else was offered the job. What would you suggest I do to get more interviews? ...read more.

YOUR CAREER: career planning during a recession

With the media generating hysteria over the world’s financial instability and the employment outlook for 2009 seeming bleak, chemical engineers can take some comfort from the fact that their skills remain in demand. As industries such as construction, manufacturing and banking feel the harsh effects of an economic downturn, the oil & gas, pharmaceutical, food & drink, validation, water and nuclear sectors remain relatively strong, continuing to generate demand for well qualified and experienced chemical engineers...read more.
